Day 1 – Medan madness
Plane skids in hot, sticky, horns scream before wheels stop. Grab a becak, three,wheel chaos, to the guesthouse near the mosque, call to prayer bounces off concrete. Street stall dinner, martabak thick with egg, sweet condensed milk drizzle, sugar rush. Sleep with fan rattling like a helicopter.
Day 2-4 – Bukit Lawang jungle
Minibus north, windows stuck, karaoke blaring, drop at the river. Tube inner,tube raft down Bohorok, brown water, kingfishers dive, kids wave from bamboo bridges. Trek starts muddy, leeches latch, guide flicks with cigarette. Orangutans swing, mom drops durian, thud, baby clings upside down. Night camp, canvas damp, gibbons whoop at dawn, coffee boiled on fire. One extra day rafting, splash fights, cold beer reward at the village.
Day 5 – Lake Toba chill
Bus to Parapat, ferry chugs across crater lake, volcano island rises green. Rent scooter, wind whips, stop at waterfalls, locals bathe in shorts, soap suds. Batak house stay, carved gables, coffee roasted in a wok, tuak palm wine sneaks up. Equator GPS pings 2° N, close, sun still high, no shadow under the bike.
Day 6-7 – Fly to Sorong, prep Raja
Early flight, wings dip over rice terraces, land west Papua. Speedboat to Waigeo, homestay on stilts, reef drops off the porch. Gear check, 5 mm suit, camera housing, nitrox fill. Night, kids sell coconut, machete hack, drink from the shell, stars dump straight down.
Day 8-17 – Raja Ampat liveaboard
Board the pinisi, teak deck creaks, ten days drift. Cape Kri, barracuda tornado, manta cleaner station, wings flap slow. Melissa’s Garden, pygmy seahorse pinky,nail size, guide points, you squint. Night dive Blue Magic, flashlight sparks plankton, mandarin fish dance neon. Arborek jetty, kids jump off pier, whale shark under the boat, mouth open, remoras stuck. Misool lagoons, jellyfish soup, no sting, golden pulse. Equator crossed twice, GPS 0°00’00” exact at Shadow Reef, sun noon, no shadow on the mast. Fresh tuna sashimi every lunch, crew sings at sunset, Bintang cold.
Day 18 – Sorong to Labuan Bajo
Speedboat back, domestic hop, wings bank over karsts. Land Flores, dragon signs everywhere, grab a bemo to the harbor town, smell dried fish, coffee thick as tar.
Day 19-21 – Komodo land dragons
Morning boat to Rinca, ranger with stick, “stay close.” Komodo lumber, forked tongue flick, deer bones crunch under claw. Hike the hill, view islands scatter turquoise, wind rips. Pink beach picnic, sand rose from coral bits, snorkel off shore, turtles graze. Camp Loh Liang, buffalo snort at dusk, dragons dig near the kitchen, smell meat.
Day 22-28 – Komodo liveaboard
Seven,night sail, phinisi again, smaller crew. Manta Point, current rips, hook in, five mantas barrel roll, mouths funnel. Castle Rock, sharks circle, tuna blitz, adrenaline breakfast. Batu Bolong, coral wall explodes color, clownfish guard eggs, napoleon wrasse bumps your mask. Night dive Pillarsteen, flashlight finds octopus hunting crabs, color shift sand to rock. Gili Lawa hill sunset, dragons below, bats stream out, sky burns orange. Equator south now, 8° S, but the belt still hums.
Day 29 – Labuan Bajo unwind
Dock morning, legs wobble land,sick, warung nasi campur, chili burn. Mirror cave, stalactites drip, bats squeak. Night market, squid skewer, corn grilled black, cold Bintang under string lights.
Day 30 – Fly out
Dawn flight, wings climb over savanna, Komodo shrinks, then Java rice fields, Bali rooftops. Jakarta connection, smell kretek cigarettes, last nasi goreng airport, spicy. Plane lifts, you flip the logbook, 47 dives, 3 orangutans, 12 dragons, equator crossed four times, already circling dates for round two.
