Weigh-In Wednesday: 5 of My Favorite Things

In addition to working towards a healthier me physically, I’m also working on maintaining a healthier attitude and perspective. I don’t have too much to report on actual weight-loss this month, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite health-related things right now that are helping me achieve my goals… even if the going is slow… really slow.

1. FitBit, MyFitnessPal and Water Daily

I have an old-school, clipon FitBit that I’ve recently revived and started wearing again during the day. It helps me keep track of how active I am at work and helps motivate me to move around. I really want to get one of the new wristbands though because I take my clipon off when I ride… since I lost one once when it fell into the arena dirt while I was jumping a course. Plus, FitBit syncs with the free calorie counter app I use MyFitnessPal. I love this app for its ease of use and simple design, yet it’s still got all the bells and whistles I could want.

Finally, I’ve been working on drinking more water. I know, it sounds silly but at work I get so engrossed in projects I forget to go fill up my water bottle. Sometimes, I’ll go an entire 8 hour work day and only drink 1 glass of water. Not good! So I downloaded Water Daily to help me track my water intake, as well as help remind me to hydrate!

2. Jillian Michaels and PiYO

Working out is hard. It’s hard to find the time, hard to be motivated to follow through and then it’s hard during the workout too. But I found if I break it up into different types of exercises and tell myself all I need is 20-30 minutes, it doesn’t seem like such an impossible task. So I’ve been working out at home with the help of some Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and PiYO DVDs. They’re quick, not ridiculously difficult and best of all you don’t need any equipment. Any reason I can remove for not working out is a win in my book!

3. Champion Capri’s and Saucony Ride 7’s

The only clothes I like to shop for are breeches, but a girl’s got to have options! So I ‘splurged’ on a pair of capri yoga pants and new tennis shoes (since mine bit the dust after 5 years). Surprisingly, these small items help motivate me to workout because I love them so much. The C9 Champion Capri’s are ridiculously comfortable and not skin-tight, and my electric blue Saucony Ride 7 tennis shoes are pretty, fun and super supportive. Maybe there’s more truthin the saying ‘dress for success’ than I ever really thought?

4. Baked Chicken Parmesan and Grilled Asparagus

Part of my quest to live a healthier lifestyle includes changing what I eat. I’m not good at dieting (especially diets where you can’t eat specific foods), so instead of limiting myself, I’m trying to make my favorite dishes with a twist, as well as include vegetables with every meal. So far my favorite has been this Baked Chicken Parmesan recipe from Skinny Taste, paired with grilled Asparagus and Feta from Once Upon a Chef. Both websites have some great, healthy recipes that I absolutely love!

5. Teal & Lime Lifestyle Blog

Okay, so this one might be a little bit out there, but bear with me. I’ve been reading more blogs lately and branching out of my typical equestrian genre. I stumbled across Teal & Lime while browsing Pintrest for home decor ideas. She recently blogged about “What To Do When Everything Seems Impossibly Hard” and her story, and her tips, really resonated with me. I need to remember her 4th tip for sure: just do something stupid easy so you feel like you’ve at least accomplished something.

  1. I am the same way about water! I make a giant thing of iced tea and drink the tea and then refill it with water after lunch. I also have been starting my day off with green tea. Much healthier than coffee with a ton of creamer (oops). I have also been trying to incorporate veggies at every meal. My biggest struggle is working out. I am not a morning person so I get up at 9, eat breakfast, go to work, get to the barn at 5:15, do chores until 6:30, leave the barn by 7:30. When I get home I have trouble wanting to cook and after a bath/shower have NO motivation to do anything other than netflix. I just really need to get up early and bust out a workout.

  2. I kind of want a fitbit! I have a great GPS watch for running, but it’s not the same as a fitbit. I’m curious how much moving I do in a day. Awesome job on being a better you! I really need to work on that. I go through phases where I’m really good, but then meh…
    I’ve found meeting up with a buddy to run (my form of working out) is the best way to stay motivated and be held accountable. Not always possible though of course. When I’m really feeling all “UGH I DON’T WANNA EXERCISE!!!!” I find that new workout clothes are totally helpful. I now own an awful lot because my motivation is generally very low… And I like shopping. Whatever.

  3. I too have been trying to be a bit more healthy. While it would be nice to shed a couple pounds on my rear it really isn’t priority to me, I want to feel healthy.
    I haven’t really changed much about what I need but I did change portions and I try to snack healthier and fill up on water as much as I can.
    I was running but now that we have moved in with the in-laws while the house is built, my running has come to a halt as I simply refuse to run on the shoulder of a major highway. Though, I can’t help but feel guilty… *sigh*

    Good for you for working out at home. I just cannot seem to do it!

  4. I have trouble remembering to drink water too! I like to add lime or lemon slices to make it yummy. Another thing I LOVE really helps when I am craving sweets… you can make “ice cream” out of frozen bananas. Hear me out. Freeze bananas in chunks and then toss them in the food processor. I add a spoonful of cocoa powder to make chocolate “ice cream”. Once you blend it all up, it has the exact same consistency & flavor as soft serve ice cream. IT’S AMAZING and it makes me feel like I’m eating something “bad”.

  5. So right now I’m about 40 pounds above where I want to be and about 30 pounds overweight. I started a new healthy regimen this week where I am being very diligent about logging my food, eating better and cutting sugar and refined carbs, and working out at least 6 days a week. I’m doing the Insanity DVDs right now and mixing in some strength training and additional running/elliptical at the gym. I think I’m a lot like you in that if I can break it up a little its a bit more doable! So I usually do Insanity in the morning before work and then hit the gym at lunch time.

    As far as the FitBit band, I don’t wear mine when I ride anyway because it counts Chloe’s steps as mine! I just log it on the app as activity and wear it for the long trek to and from the back of the pasture to get her. 🙂

  6. I love skinnytaste!! And have tried a bunch of her recipes with success. It also helps that you can adjust your own meals to some of her ideas, and it help to make it more healthy as well. Working out at home is what really makes a difference to me. I don’t feel like I have enough time to go to the gym in the a.m., but hey, a perfectly good workout DVD or my elliptical would be easy enough. 🙂

    My Kindle.

    I held off for the longest time getting an ereader, choosing instead to try to make the printed word live on longer…except I wasn’t reading as much as I used to. Carrying books everywhere isn’t always easy. And so I fell out of my reading habit – especially before bed. Unfortunately, I replaced the habit with watching screens instead: my phone, my laptop, my TV. My sleep has suffered as a result of not getting away from screens earlier in the evening.

    Enter Kindle:

    I purchased one two weeks ago. I have gobbled up the first book I put on it and my sleep quality is way better which makes the rest of my health better.

  8. I drink 4-5 Nalgene bottles a day of water, which is about ~150 ounces. I take them with me when I’m driving more than 20 minutes. I take them to the barn. I take them everywhere!

    I completed PiYo in April and I was so much stronger for it! I stopped during/immediately after the wedding, but have recently started jogging every other day and PiYo/riding every other day. I do straight yoga when I feel like I need a break!

    I am super interested in a fitbit!!

  9. That’s funny, I feel like I only get my daily water intake done at work. I don’t drink soda or coffee, so I stick to water and I always bring my lunch so I am not tempted to eat out. Once I go home, it’s another story. I want a beer, or juice, most of the time I never drink any water.

    At work I keep a few tumblers on my desk and I take my vitamins at work which helps me to remember to drink water.

  10. love it! i have a water bottle at work that has lines drawn on it with specific times written in. i need to have drank to each line by that time, and then refilled it by a time to start again. sometimes it means i just chug water at the prescribed times but it does help get more water!

  11. Great tips! I’m also trying to get back into shape and have been using the “Biggest Loser” DVDs along with the elliptical a few times per week. I like those DVDs because you can mix it up with the “30 Day Kickstart” and the yoga ones to add variation and to work different areas of the body. Haven’t tried the fit bit, but I’ve heard good things.

  12. I love my Fitbit! I have the Flex and I’ve been wanting to get one of the newer ones that measures how many floors you climb and tracks your heart rate. Also, grilled asparagus sounds divine.

  13. Skinnytaste has been my obsession for years. It’s pretty much the only place I go to for recipes. I’ve made the Parm Chicken a lot and absolutely love it. Also recommend her turkey burgers, and crockpot turkey chili (which I make on the stove).

    I want a FitBit myself, but I wonder- how does it perform for horse related activities (for instance how does posting the trot translate into steps, etc? Or is that not how it works- is it more about heart rate and calorie burn?)

  14. I also should have mentioned the Success in the Saddle workouts are only 20 minutes so they are easy to squeeze in.

  15. I think my previous comment was eaten by the inter-webs but I suggested the Success in the Saddle DVDs. You can find them on Amazon. They are great because they are targeted to riders. I hate working out but I can force myself to do them since I feel like it’s helping my riding. 🙂

  16. I have those exact same shoes and I also love them! And pretty much all of Target’s work out clothes are fabulous. =-)
