SmartPak Piper Breeches Review

I’m always on the hunt for schooling breeches and they can be surprisingly difficult to find, probably because I’m looking for the perfect combination of style, function and price. I want my breeches to come in different colors, be made of great material for both summer and winter, be durable enough to take some abuse and not break the bank. It’s really a tall order, but the SmartPak Piper Breeches have all of these qualities in spades.

SmartPak Piper Breeches in Wheat

First, let’s talk features. Pipers come in knee patch, full seat or side-zip and each style offers wide belt loops, four deep pockets and a sock bottom. With sizes from 24-46 and come in no less than 13 color options, SmartPak Pipers have all the bells and whistles you could want from a pair breeches. The fabric is sufficiently stretchy (not too much, but not too little) and the weight works well for any climate in my opinion. I have noticed some pilling on the very upper, inside thigh of all my pairs of Pipers. While at first I was really concerned about what this meant in terms of durability, I’ve had several pairs for a year now with no issues. For me, I don’t mind one bit, since it hasn’t compromised the breeches and you can’t see it anyways.

Well they sound great, Tracy. But what about fit?  The earlier pairs of Pipers I bought had a slightly higher rise, in my opinion. However, I purchased a pair a few weeks ago and the rise is definitely shorter and hits me slightly above low-rise, which I like. I always tuck in my shirt when I ride, so a slightly higher rise is good for me. A common complaint I’ve heard about this brand has been that they tend to sag during wear. Again, earlier pairs were much worse than my most recent pair; however, I always wear a belt so it never bothered me.

The Recommendation

You can’t beat the price for this type of quality, with this many options and features. You just can’t. And SmartPak is always running promotions, so it’s easy to get anywhere between 5-25% off the retail price. If you’re on the fence about ordering a pair, I strongly encourage you to at least try them. SmartPak offers free returns (with shipping!) and have excellent customer service. SmartPak Piper Breeches are hands-down my favorite brand of schooling breeches; I’ll never buy anything else!

            1. I so wish these fit me! They are definitely shaped for women with straighter bodies – anyone with more of an hourglass figure is going to have trouble with fit IMO. But they are great schooling pants for those they do fit!

            2. i’m so pumped – already have two pairs (tho it was not love at first sight with the first pair) and just ordered a third during their recent 20% off sale. the real trick is to find them on clearance tho – you can get them for suuuuuper cheap!

            3. I have a pair of the full seats and am totally on the fence about them. I feel like they are too low rise and the crotch sags, but I like the material and the color combinations.

I think I’m going to pick up a pair of knee patch during their next sale and see if I feel differently about those!

I have four pairs myself and think they are adorable, but … The butt sag drives me nuts, and they are way too hot for me to wear here in central CA’s summer heat. Once it hits the mid-90s, the Pipers are too hot for me. And mid-90s is a COOL summer day. Regarding the butt sag, I found that the full seats sag LESS. How weird and unexpected is that?!?! Even with the sag and non-summer wear, I do like the Pipers and think they offer a lot of style for a relatively low price, :0)

            5. I really like my Pipers too! Although I have a pair of Romfh breeches that I would say fit better, but they’re also more expensive. I noticed that the fit changed a lot- I bought an earlier pair and it had really bad gapping at the waist and definitely sagged. I always have to wear a belt with them, which is a pain for me because I wear a back brace to ride so it means that I’m having to take off my belt and switch it with the back brace. Having to do that makes me feel like I’m undressing in front of other people at the barn haha. The newer pair fits perfectly though! I want the maroon ones next 🙂

I bought a pair with their last promo and sadly suck at sizing and got a size too small. Luckily, as you mentioned they have free returns so I’m now anxiously awaiting my new pair that hopefully fits! Heard nothing but good things and decided to try them out!

Overall, I like the Pipers, too. They’re adorable and seem to be really solid quality, but I only have one pair of the full-seats because the sagging is obnoxious even with a belt. If the fit issue seems to have improved recently, I may try a second pair during the next big SmartPak sale! The TuffRider ribbed breeches are my favorites, personally – slightly lower quality and no fun colors (boo), but the fit, fabric weight, and cost are perfect for me.

These breeches fit me well and I do love them… but I don’t love them as much at my TS Trophy Hunters. But those are much more expensive so I can’t really hold it against the Pipers lol 🙂

              1. And yes the fit has changed in the newer ones, they have tweaked them and I think it’s for the better.. I am most glad that they put the material over the loops where it fastens b/c those bad boys hurt if you don’t tuck your shirt in!

A few things I have to say about the Piper breeches (and I did my own post a while back on Saddle Seeks Horse). http://susanfriedlandsmith.com/2015/01/16/5-reasons-youl…patch-breeches/
A+ for covering up cellulite dimples. I think of them like a wet suit. They kind of suck me in. Also, I don’t think the SmartPak folks understand colors. The Military Green pair I’ve had for a year look brown. The new Charcoal pair I’ve ordered looks green. I held them up next to a pair of work pants that are definitely charcoal, and they were not the same color. Also, I HAVE to wear a belt with them or I’m scared I’ll have a plumber butt. I bought two different sizes: one for when I’m feeling trim and the other for PMS days, etc. The larger size definitely has a bit of a crotch-hanging-too low issue.

I like the fit of my Tredstep better and of course, love the TS! Can’t beat those. But for schooling, SP is good.
