Repeat after me: I promise not to spend this entire blog post bitching about the god-awful weather. Okay, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about riding. Unlike last week where I stayed away from the barn for an entire 10 days, this week I’ve actually ridden my horse. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings were both warm enough to venture out, and I know Miles really enjoyed the attention and exercise.

For those of us stuck up North, 20 degrees and cloudy is the new 60 degrees and sunny; so any chance I can get to hop on the ponykins, I’m taking it. Miles has been quite… expressive, thanks to the lack of consistent riding. On Tuesday he was convinced he was a giraffe and that he absolutely, under no circumstances, could relax. But can you really blame the guy? I know I can’t. So I focused on moving forward off my leg, softening a centimeter and steering. Yeah, back to basics for us!

Riding with friends is better. Especially if you are both Chestnut Thoroughbred geldings wearing Happy Mouth bits.

Wednesday was a bit better, and after we warmed up I was able to get some really nice moments of self-carriage. Except for the huge buck he threw the first time we cantered. Which was actually kind of funny, since I stayed on and wasn’t terrified. We worked on transitions as much as we could, without getting into an unnecessary fight, and finished with a really nice long and long hack-winning trot. Tonight is usually my lesson night, but we’ve been cancelled due to the cold. #StoryOfMyLife

  1. I can’t believe that I saw the weather was going to be in the 30’s and got SO excited. What is wrong with me?!?!?!

  2. you and i are in the same boat right now… if my mare isn’t working at least 2-3x each week, it’s almost pointless and we just end up fighting… but hey, yay for thinking a huge buck is funny instead of scary!! 🙂

  3. Yay for some sale time & better yet enjoying it and not letting the brain gremlins get the better of you. I too am struggling for saddle time (story of my life recently) but i can’t really blame the weather so much as workload – but c’est la vie & back to basics for us too ☺

  4. I don’t know why it’s so hard to leave a decent comment using my cell phone. . . anyway, I also was saying how spring is around the corner and such a subtle joy. I miss that sweet season so much. There’s something about the tiny buds that start to form which burgeon into actual leaves, the sighting of the first Robin, daffodils and crocuses peeking out of the ground, how the ugly winter grass morphs into a perky green carpet almost overnight. And lilacs. Those are what I miss most about a Midwestern spring. Oh and the saying, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” Take heart. Sunnier, warmer days are around the corner.

  5. I hear ya about the temps!! Grr!!! And also the ‘expressiveness’ and the buck!! Sounds like you were really brave about it though! Glad to hear you guys are working through the kinks. I hear it’s going to be a balmy 40 degrees this weekend – hooray!
