Last week I tagged along with Sam on a business trip; he had a conference in San Francisco, California and I thought it sounded like the perfect getaway. So I packed a bag and flew across the country for an extended weekend. I’d never been to Cali before, so I was pretty excited — and let me tell you, the state didn’t disappoint. The weather was gorgeous the entire time we were there and I got some much-needed R&R.
We flew out really early on Wednesday, but we sprang for first class seats… just for funsies. And let me tell you, it was so worth it! Despite nearly six hours in the air, I got off the plane feeling energetic [probably in large part due to the never-ending drinks and food, including an omelet with sausage, hash browns and fresh fruit]. We immediately checked into our hotel, which was in the heart of Downtown, and began exploring.
But the best part of Wednesday was meeting the amazing and wonderful L Williams of Viva Carlos! She trekked all the way across the Bay to take us to a cool, hip restaurant. We drank beer and ate dinner; she had a salad and I had mac n cheese which I feel is oddly representative of our personalities, more so than food really has a right to be. And of course, we talked and talked and talked. We talked about Ramone and Miles, we talked about boys and we talked about the equine industry in general. We swapped stories and before I knew it, I’d been up for almost 20 hours straight! I have to say that it was so awesome to meet another fellow blogger, especially L. She is so much fun and super easy to talk to! Even though we’re really quite different — she brings up greenies and shows 3’6″, whereas I buy finished and show 2’6″, plus we live 2,447 miles from each other — we totally hit it off. We talked like we’d known each other for years!
Thursday I worked remotely, so that was pretty much my entire day. It was nice to get outside and take some walks in the sunshine though during breaks. I loved being able to walk out of my hotel and see a million different options for lunch and just relaxing in the sun for 20 minutes. I was even adventurous one day and got Vietnamese! On Friday, which was a tough day for me, my husband surprised me with breakfast in bed a la room service and a 50-minute Swedish massage. It was heavenly! After that, I did some retail therapy. Our hotel was minutes from Union Square, which is a plaza surrounded by high-end stores like Gucci, Bvlgari, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, etc. Luckily, there were some normal stores too, like Macy’s, Forever 21 [which has plus sizes now!] and DSW. I’m not normally a big shopper, unless it’s equine-related, so it was nice to grab some new shoes and a few tops for work.
That evening we went to a Giant’s baseball game with one of Sam’s coworkers. The stadium was really pretty, located right on the Bay, so the views were spectacular. The game itself was a blowout, the Giants lost like 7-0, but the food was good and we even managed to stay warm [the breeze that comes off the Bay in early spring is COLD!].
DH only had business in the morning on Saturday, so we took a cab about 10 minutes out to Fisherman’s Wharf early in the afternoon… mostly to try In-N-Out Burger, which was the only thing Sam really wanted to do on our trip. Yeah, we’re super classy travelers, ya’ll. So we ate delicious cheeseburgers, walked down a few Piers, saw Alcatraz from afar and even witnessed a nude bike race. After a quick catnap, we headed to dinner at Farallon, which is a great seafood restaurant. We ate oysters and I had the best Halibut I’ve ever tasted, plus cheesecake for dessert. What more could a girl ask for?!
