Horse Show Prep

Our first horse show of the season is this week – horses will haul up Wednesday afternoon in fact, so I’ve been in full-fledged panic horse show prep mode for the last 10 days at least. With the schedule change, it seems like the horse show is coming up much more quickly, but luckily I’ve got planning and prep pretty much down to a science.

Happy Birthday Miles

Happy 10th Birthday Miles!

It’s official: we’re into double digits! Today is Miles’ 10th birthday. I’m going to the grocery store to pick up some carrots and apples, then to the feed mill to grab his favorite alfalfa pellets. Hopefully the weather holds and we can enjoy a trail ride this evening too — basically all of his favorite things. So happy birthday to my big red <3 Here’s to many, many more.

In Defense of “Dumbing Down” Show Hunters

Over the last few months, there’s been a lot of discussion about the problems with American show hunters: they’re too slow, they’re all drugged up, they are prepped and lunged to death, there are too many divisions and too many horse shows. And critics say that all of this combines to create awful animal welfare situations and terrible riders! I’m not here to refute every point, in fact some of it I wholeheartedly agree with. But some of these points fall far from the mark, and I’m here to defend “dumbing down” show hunters.

Heart Dogs

Lauren at She Moved to Texas started an informal blog hop about the other four-legged furbabies we all love: our dogs. I didn’t grow up with dogs, in fact, I grew up with cats. But I’ve always loved dogs (well, animals in general really) and my husband did grow up with dogs. So when we struck out on our own, it was a no-brainer to bring a little ball of fluff into our lives.
