I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “work smarter, not harder.” It’s a pretty basic concept, but it’s so easily forgotten when you are in the middle of the problem with pressure weighing down on you to solve it. It’s easy to get frustrated with horses sometimes; they seem to have a knack for doing an exercise perfectly one day and the next day having it all blow up in your face. The easy way out is to get emotional and either give up or try to overpower the horse. In my personal experience, these two options usually don’t work out very well. So I’ve taken to working smarter to solve my riding problems.
Some days you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed, nothing goes wrong, but nothing really goes right either. That’s how my day on Monday was and unfortunately my weird, awkward mood followed me to the barn. As an adult amateur, sometimes stress at work or family problems bleed into my barn time (and even worse) my riding time. I do my best to let my emotions go and focus on the moment: each clip-clop of my horse’s hooves in the dirt and each breath I take in a downward transition. But I’m not always successful at this endeavor. On Monday, I was just in a funk… I had lost my riding mojo.
Despite the lack of evidence on this blog, I’ve been keeping up my frequent riding schedule of 5-6 days per week. While I know I’m making progress and working on important things, the improvement has been so minuscule from ride to ride that I haven’t talked about it much. But this week was full of fun adventures to share!
Spring has sprung, and in addition to warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, equestrian brands are releasing their 2016 spring collections. I like peruse some of the bigger brands (Ariat, RJ Classics, etc.) just to see what’s new and fashionable, but I usually don’t buy anything I don’t need. This year, SmartPak substantially expanded their Piper Breech collection, and in addition to new fit and new colors, I got a 5% discount code (PIPERC16), plus a $15 gift card for my anniversary of putting Miles on autoship SmartPaks. So I bought a few new pairs, and thought I’d share some of the new SmartPak Piper Breeches options with everyone.
One of the features I love about our home is our second-story loft space. It’s a wide open room that gets a ton of natural light, and can be used for anything. Right now, it’s set up as a second family room with some of our old furniture. Of course, you won’t be surprised when I tell you I also have big plans for our lovely loft! Luckily for me, my mom has been instrumental in making this space come to life. Thanks mom <3
